Want to Know About Habitat for Humanity?
Farmville Area Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit, volunteer Christian ministry that partners with qualified families, volunteers, and donors to provide housing for families in need in the Farmville Area.
These partnerships enable Habitat to build simple, decent affordable housing for people in need who cannot obtain home ownership through traditional methods. Habitat houses are then sold to partner’s families at no profit and no interest mortgages. The mortgage payments from partner families go into a revolving fund to build more houses.
The Farmville Area Habitat hopes to build twenty homes in our area within the next six years.
So, How Does it Work?
Habitat is a Hand Up Not a Hand Out, meaning we do not a “give away” program. Partner families invest hundreds of hours of labor — “sweat equity” in building their homes and the homes of other Habitat families. They must pay for their house through monthly mortgage payments.
Habitat seeks to build lives as well as houses. Through home ownership, families can gain self-esteem and hope for the future.
How Does A Family Get A Home?
Qualifying families must submit an application to Habitat’s Family Selection Committee. The committee chooses homeowners based on housing needs, willingness to partner with Habitat by giving sweat equity and ability to repay the loan. The committee also follows a non-discriminatory policy of family selection. The Board of Directors makes the final approval of partner’s families.
In order for a family to qualify for a Habitat house, they must meet the following conditions:
- Currently live in substandard housing
- Have an annual family income of 50% or less of the area’s median income
- Be willing to partner with Habitat of Humanity by giving 300 hours of “sweat equity” by either working on their house or another Habitat project
- Be able to pay a monthly mortgage of approximately $200 per month
- Have lived in the Prince Edward/ Farmville area for the previous year.
